The seed of establishing NEGROS KABATAAN, INC. started on 2005 and stemmed from the success of the informal outreach programs and activities by some private and well-meaning individuals. To cement the existence of the organization, NKI was officially established last March 23, 2007, with its formal registration with SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and other government agencies and accreditation with Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, the province of Negros Occidental, and City of Talisay and Bacolod.
The smiles and the pure gratitude we received encouraged us to contemplate, creating an organization that will institutionalize the objectives of such program in a more permanent setting and the need to set-up a platform to sustain the good works achieved by the program-activities for the children of Negros thru book donations to classrooms and libraries, gift-giving of clothing and school supplies, feeding, livelihood of organic farming.
Negros Occidental province is number 42 out of 82 in the poverty incidence for the whole of Philippines, with 1 as the poorest. With population from age 0 to 14 at 38.64% and with 50.6% those who finished only elementary out of the 1,873,472 household population, the need to fully complement the insufficient and deteriorating educational system and the widespread poverty is the paramount consideration for creating a two-pronged program targeting not just the children but also the parents.
